In September 2024, the Royal Thai Embassy in Brussels invited the Director and conservation expert of the Office of National Museums of Thailand to visit Belgium to discuss and explore possible cooperation with Belgian museums and relevant authorities, including BELSPO, KIK-IRPA, Flemish ICOM. They have also visited various types of museums across Belgium such as the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, the MAS, the Institute of Natural Sciences, Comic Arts Museum, the Sensing the Buddha exhibition at Royal Museum of Mariemont, and the restoration of Ghent altarpiece at the Museum of Fine Arts of Ghent. Thailand is planning to open next year a new/upgraded centre for science for conservation and is keen to work with the Belgian side. Both sides are eager to exchange experts and knowledge on museology, science for conservation, and to organise academic seminars, etc.
Museums in Belgium are managed and funded by various entities and organisations, ranging from city, community, to regional and federal governments. In the Walloon region alone, there are almost 500 museums. Each region categorises types of museum and expertise in a different manner. In Flanders, museums are sorted into 5 categories i.e. culture and history, modern art, ancient art, applied art, and technology. Nowadays, the curation of museums in Belgium and Thailand are focusing on storying-telling and connecting with the surrounding community and visitors. Therefore, both sides stand to benefit from learning from one another.
