Renouncing and Reapplying for Thai Nationality

Renouncing Thai Nationality for Thai Nationals Married to Foreigners

According to Section 13 of the Nationality Act, B.E. 2508 (1965)

1. A Thai woman married to a foreigner who wishes to renounce her Thai nationality to adopt her husband's nationality should submit an application form ส.ช.1:

  • If residing in Bangkok, submit the application to the Commander of the Administration Division, Special Branch Bureau.
  • If residing in other provinces, submit the application to the Provincial Police Commander.
  • If residing abroad, submit the application to the diplomatic or consular officer at the Thai Embassy or Consulate in that country.

2. Required documents:

  • Marriage certificate or family status registration.
  • House registration.
  • Birth certificate or birth registration.
  • ID card.
  • Document showing that the husband's nationality law permits or agrees to the adoption of his nationality (certificate of nationality application).
  • Name change certificate (Form Ch.3), if any.
  • Surname change certificate or registration (Form Ch.2 or Ch.4), if any.
  • 12, 4 x 6 cm (2 inch) photos (formal).

3. Required documents for the husband:

  • 12, 4 x 6 cm (2 inch) photos (formal).

4. Fees: According to Ministerial Regulation (B.E. 2510), issued under the Nationality Act, B.E. 2508, dated May 15, 1967, item 12 (6), the fee for each application is 5 baht.

5. Additional details:

  • Important information in the documents must be consistent. If not, it is not considered the same person. Submit a request to the relevant officer for correction or confirmation.
  • The certificate of nationality application in 2 (5) must be translated into Thai and certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belgium/Luxembourg.
  • Bring 2 witnesses with ID cards or government official cards and house registrations to confirm that the applicant is truly Thai.

 Renouncing Thai Nationality for Dual National Children and Other Cases

According to Sections 14 and 15 of the Nationality Act, B.E. 2508 (1965)

1. Submit an application form ส.ช.2:

  • If residing in Bangkok, submit the application to the Commander of the Administration Division, Special Branch Bureau.
  • If residing in other provinces, submit the application to the Provincial Police Commander.
  • If residing abroad, submit the application to the diplomatic or consular officer at the Thai Embassy or Consulate in that country.

2. Required documents:

  • Birth certificate or birth registration or place of birth certificate.
  • House registration.
  • Thai ID card.
  • Thai Passport.
  • Name change certificate (Form Ch.3), if any.
  • Surname change certificate or registration (Form Ch.2 or Ch.4), if any.
  • Military certificate (S.D.9). if any
  • Certificate of nationality from Belgium or Luxembourg.
  • Copy of the parents documents (Thai ID or Thai Passport)
  • 12, 4 x 6 cm (2 inch) photos (formal).
  • 2, 4 x 6 cm (2 inch) photos of parents (formal).

3. Fees: According to Ministerial Regulation (B.E. 2510), the fee for each application is 5 baht.

4. Additional details:

  • Important information in the documents must be consistent. If not, it is not considered the same person. Submit a request to the relevant officer for correction or confirmation.
  • The certificate of nationality in 2 (7) must be translated into Thai and certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belgium or Luxembourg.
  • Bring two witnesses with ID cards or government official cards and house registrations to confirm that the applicant is truly Thai.
  • Applicants must be at least 20 years old.

Write in the subject line of the email "A request for renouncing Thai nationality for Mr.(name of applicant.)"

Once document reviewing in completed, the Embassy will contact the applicant to arrange an appointment to submit original documents and interview the 2 Thai witnesse. Witnesse must be able to confirm that you were actually born in Thailand and know your place of birth.

Please note: 

Loss of Thai nationality will be fully effective only when it is announcing in the Royal Gazette in accordance with Section 5 of the Nationality Act, B.E. 2508.

The process of renouncing Thai Nationality takes approximately 3 years or longer, starting from the day your request is sent to Royal Thai Police Headquarters, Bangkok.

Reapplying for Thai Nationality After Renunciation Due to Marriage to a Foreigner

According to Section 23 of the Nationality Act, B.E. 2508 (1965):

1. Submit an application form ก.ช.2:

  • If residing in Bangkok, submit the application to the Commander of the Administration Division, Special Branch Bureau.
  • If residing in other provinces, submit the application to the Provincial Police Commander.
  • If residing abroad, submit the application to the diplomatic or consular officer at the Thai Embassy or Consulate in that country.

2. Required documents:

  • Birth certificate or birth registration or place of birth certificate.
  • House registration (Form Tho.R.13).
  • Alien registration certificate.
  • Document of marriage dissolution.
  • Marriage certificate or family status registration.
  • Document of husband's nationality adoption.
  • Document of Thai nationality renunciation (Ministry of Interior announcement published in the Royal Gazette).
  • Educational records in Thailand (student registration).
  • Charity or public service records.
  • 12, 4 x 6 cm (2 inch) photos (formal).

3. Fees: According to Ministerial Regulation (B.E. 2510), the fee for each application is 1,000 baht.

4. Additional details:

  • Important information in the documents must be consistent. If not, it is not considered the same person. Submit a request to the relevant officer for correction or confirmation.
  • Documents in 2 (4), (5), and (6) must be translated into Thai and certified.
  • Bring 4 witnesses with ID cards or government official cards and house registrations to confirm that the applicant is truly Thai.
