Registrant Enrollment and Military Draft Deferment

For Thai students who are studying abroad (Belgium and Luxembourg)

Every Thai male citizen is required by law to join the military draft when;

1. Turning 18 years old, one has to enroll for registered status by presenting a birth certificate or Thai identity card and a copy of Thai house registration document to local Registrar (Military Personnel Recruitment) in person. If one cannot present the documents by oneself, authorisation can be passed to someone who is of legal age (over 20 years old) to enroll on one’s behalf. If one fails to enroll or no authorised person enrolls on his behalf, one will be regarded as violating the conscription law.

2. Completing 21 years old, one has to join the military draft locally, where one is registered according to the House Registration document. Thai male citizens who are studying in Belgium or Luxembourg can apply for Military Draft Deferment by presenting these documents to the local Registrar or authorising someone who is of legal age to submit them on one’s behalf.;

        2.1 A letter from the university/educational institution (written in English) confirming enrollment stating;

             2.1.1. Name and surname of student as shown on a Thai passport

             2.1.2. Field of study (current status/major/faculty/university/country)

             2.1.3. Dates enrolled and expected graduation date

             2.1.4. Length of study program (provide proof from university/educational institution)

             The original letter from the university/educational institution must be officially legalised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Belgium/Luxembourg.

     Note that: The embassy accepts legalisation sticker paper version only ***a digital version is not accepted

             A letter from the university/educational institution must be translated into Thai language and signed to acknowledge that the translation is accurate. (students can translate and sign by themselves)

        2.2 A copy of the Certificate of Registrant (Sor Dor 9) and a copy of Military Summon Letter (Sor Dor 35) (if there is one)

        2.3 A copy of Thai House Registration document

        2.4 A copy of Thai Identity Card (if there is one)

        2.5 A copy of the Thai Passport

        2.6 Letter issued by the Royal Thai Embassy in Brussels for military draft deferment

3. After graduation, one has to join the first available military draft.

To obtain the Embassy's letter for military draft deferment

  • Once you have the documents in 2.1 (original copy and translation), 2.4, and 2.5 as per above, please book an appointment with the Embassy to submit those documents together with;

        - Photocopies of every pages including the page with the stamp of Ministry Foreign Affairs Belgium/Luxembourg

        - A legalisation application completely filled in

        - Fee: 15 euro/stamp (in this case, two stamps will be needed for (1) original copy of university letter and (2) translation of university letter. It will cost 30 euro)
