On 24 June 2025, the Royal Thai Embassy in Brussels facilitated a virtual meeting between the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University of Thailand, and the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) Antwerp, Belgium Instituut voor Tropische Geneeskunde | Institute of Tropical Medicine, to match their interests and discuss potential areas of cooperation. Both institutes share similar visions and priorities as well as structures and services which are strong foundations for cooperation. Both sides agreed to foster collaboration in student and staff mobility, joint research in Malaria and Dengue, vaccine trial, and certification of laboratory. For short-term collaboration, they aim for a concrete exchange of students and professors within six months. The Faculty also plans to invite a professor from ITM to attend the annual international conference on tropical medicine in Bangkok in December 2025.
The Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM), founded in 1906 in Brussels and later relocated to Antwerp in 1933, is an internationally recognised institute providing high standard education, research and medical services in tropical medicine. Its main priorities include providing equal access to treatment, preventing disease as well as emerging diseases, and combatting anti-microbial resistance. The Institute focuses on providing capacity building for middle and low-income countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
The Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, founded in 1960, is the first and only university faculty in Thailand focusing on this medical specialty. The faculty provides comprehensive services ranging from post-graduate education, research, to medical services, similar to ITM. With its 11 departments, 1 specialised hospital, and 5 centres of excellence, the faculty is well known worldwide for its strong academic performance.
