On 12 March 2025, H.E. Mrs. Kanchana Patarachoke, Ambassador of Thailand to Belgium, delivered opening remarks through a video recorded message for the Workshop on Synthetic Biology & Precision Fermentation organised by the Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, Chulalongkorn University. Ambassador Kanchana stressed the adverse impact of arm conflicts and climate change on the food production system and food security, elevating the importance of biotechnology and genetic engineering in the sustainability, availability, safety and nutritiousness of our food. Thailand, as the “Kitchen of the World,” is proud to be at the forefront on this issue in the region. The Ambassador also touched upon the STI cooperation between Thailand and Belgium which is longstanding and has flourished over the past years. Dr. Karel de Winter, Head of Technology Development at Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant from Belgium was invited by the Office of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation in Brussels to be one of the resource persons to share industrial perspective on synthetic biology.
