On 17 September 2023 between 09.00-12.30, the Royal Embassy in Brussels organised online informative briefings on the laws that concern Thai people living in Belgium and Luxembourg, and how to manage mental health. Five speakers from the Office of Attorney General, the Department of Mental Health, Thai Friendship in Belgium Association, and OASIS Belgium, as well as over 50 Thai people living in Belgium, Luxembourg and other countries participated in the event. In the opening remarks, H.E. Mr. Sek Wannamethee, Ambassador of Thailand to Belgium and Luxembourg, reiterated that the current Thai government gives priority to the well-being of Thais living abroad, which has been reflected amongst the Embassy’s main responsibilities and priorities. The briefings intended to provide necessary information for Thais living abroad so that they can attain a good quality of life with dignity and know their rights and obligations. The four sessions comprise (1) Thai laws on marriage and property management, nationality renunciation and reapplication, conscription, and child abduction; (2) factors affecting mental health, knowing one’s own emotions, activity planning for maintaining good mental health; (3) life in Belgium, Belgian laws on marriage and obtaining a work permit, and; (4) the role of OASIS Belgium in helping Thai people in distress, especially those who are facing domestic violence and all forms of exploitation. The Embassy also took the opportunity to encourage Thai people to regularly update their identification documents, i.e., ID card and passport, and register their information with the Embassy for contacting in the case of emergency. As a follow-up to the event, the Embassy is now preparing to send a legal and mental health booklet to interested Thais living in Belgium and Luxembourg by the end of September 2023.
